This week we are going to be working on the buyers guide for which bike is better for which applications.

For week 11 we didn't have much to do. We are about finished with the whole project. We did some final touches on the online part and made sure we had enough information on all of the slides. We took all of the footage and edited down to the parts that we want to present.
This week it was to rainy to actually get together and ride so we got together and talked anout how we are going to present are project and what we are going to put on are slides. We talked about how we are going to seperate the work on the persentation and whos is going to do which slides also we talked about what is going to be nessesary to talk about and what is not.
This week we decided to look into the price on the bikes because we finished all of the other tests on the bikes.
The Talaria has 2 main prices. The first price is $3,800, and the second price is $5,200 which is the upgraded version meaning that it is faster and has upgraded parts. The 2 stroke dirt bike is about $4,500 to buy new in 2016. You can buy ones used for about $2,500-$3,500 year 2016. So if you are on a budget buy the 2 stroke because it has been around longer and has more parts which would be cheaper then the Talaria due to the fact that it was introduced in 2021 and the parts are more expensive. This week we got together and did the weight test and the waterproof test. To do the weight test we got two scales and put one wheel on each scale so we took the weights and added them together to get the total weight, The gas bike weighed right around 170 pounds and the electric bike weighed around 130 pounds. So if you want a lighter bike go with the talaria.
To do the waterproof test we took a water hose and turned the bikes on then soaked the bikes in water and made sure they both stay running while wet and they both did. So there was no difference with their ability to get wet. This week we went over the bikes performance in different environment, and we went over how easy it is to work on the bikes. Environment
Maintenance
This week we got together and did tests on the suspention and the overheat test. What we found out was that the suspention on the gas bike was a lot better than the electric bike becuase it is a lot smoother and it is very adjustable. The front fork can be adjusted to be stiffer of more bouncy and same thing with the rear. On the electric bike the suspention was very stiff anf it did does not have and adjustments which are very good to have becuase if you are a lighter person you would want to have the suspention more bouncy but if you are a bigger person you would want it to be stiffer.
When we tested which bike would over heat first we just ran the bikes very hard and what we found out was the gass bike got a lot hotter but it has a raidiator and cooling fan so it got back to cold a lot faster. On the otehr hand the electric bike did not get near as hot but it does not have a cooling fan so it stayed hot a lot longer. This week we met up and both did not feel like riding so we decided to see which bike can be charged and filled up from empty to full. The electric bike took around 4 hours to charge from zero percent all the way to 100. But on the other hand the gas bike took around 5 minutes to mix the gas to a 40:1 ratio and it took about 1 minute to pour the gas in the bike. So if you want to have a faster bike to refuel, the best bike is the gas bike.
When we got the bikes all refueled we took them outside to wash them off and what we found out is that the electric bike is a lot easier to clean becuase on the gas bike there is a lot of oil that comes out of the exhaust and dirt, dust, and grass gets stuck in it when it dries so you have to get a brush and scrub it all off. The electric bike is a lot easier to just rinse off becuase there is not and exhaust also there is a lot of extra parts to clean on the gas bike. This weekend we did two races, one short race to show acceleration and one long race to show speed. When we did the short race we set up two points, the starting point and the end point. we made the two points 100 meters away from each other because we felt like it was a reasonable amount of distance to show acceleration. In the long race we set up two more points that were 200 meters away from each other to show the speed of the bikes. Only one person would be riding and the other person not riding would time the person riding and whatever bike has the fastest time would win the race.
We also did a test one which bike is more agile. For this test we set up a small track and we had the other person time the rider on this track so there was no advantage for one person if both were on the track at the same time. This test was to see which bike is more agile in turning and acceleration when slowed down for a turn. This week the weatehr was the same as last week so we where not able to go outside and actually ride so we just got together and decided on which 12 tests we are gonna do. We decided to do which bike is faster, more agile, easier to wash, faster to recharge/refule, best suspention, best on trails and road, overall weight, more waterproof, easier to work on, better for the environment, which can overheat.
This is how we will preform each test
For the first week of our genius hour project, we made our website to post our blogs and cam up with the plan for our project. The idea that we had was to run a 2 stroke bike and a electric bike through a test. The test would have 12 different categories and our bikes would be tested in each. Each bike will have categories that has its positives and negatives.
The goal at the end of the project is to have a buyers guide that tells you the advantages and disadvantages of each bike in those categories For week 2 of are project we where planning on getting together to do some tests on the bikes but with all of the wind and rain we where not able to do so. We ended up going to the store to get some supplies that we would need in the future for the tests like duck tape to mark off lines for the races and cones that we can use to test the mobility of the bikes by weaving through them.
For next week in hopes that the ground dries up and if the weather allows we are planning on getting together and doing two different races, one short race and one long race to see which bike is better off the line and which bike has a higher top speed. After we finish the races we will see which bike is easier to wash because it is never good to store your bike when it is dirty. |
